How-to guide
Fake check and overpayment scams
A check clears in a few days — but "available funds" isn't the same as a check that won't bounce. Overpayment scams exploit that gap: you wire back the "extra" before the check is discovered to be fake.
How it works
- You're paid by check for a job, sale, or prize — for more than the agreed amount.
- You're asked to deposit it and send back the difference (or pay a "fee") fast.
- Days later the check bounces; the money you sent is gone and you owe the bank the full amount.
How to protect yourself
Never send money back against a check that just "cleared". Wait until your bank confirms it won't be reversed (which can take weeks), and be suspicious of any overpayment. Run the request through Scam Doctor.
Frequently asked questions
My bank said the check cleared — isn't it safe?
No. "Cleared" or "available" funds can still be reversed when a check is later found to be fake — often after you've already sent money back.
Why would someone overpay me on purpose?
So they can ask for the "difference" back in real money before the fake check bounces. The overpayment is the whole trick.
