USPS and toll text scams are surging in 2026

If you've gotten a text about a "held package" or an "unpaid toll" with a pay-now link, you're not alone — fake delivery and toll texts are among the most reported scams of 2026. They all follow the same playbook.

What the texts say

The messages claim a small unpaid balance — a redelivery fee or a $6.99 toll — and threaten a late penalty unless you pay immediately through a link.

  • "USPS: your package is on hold due to an unpaid fee. Update here…"
  • "You have an outstanding toll of $6.99. Avoid a $50 late fee: pay now…"
  • The link goes to a look-alike domain, never the real usps.com or tolling agency.

Why they're fake

Real couriers and tolling agencies bill the registered account or owner — they do not text you a link demanding instant payment. The tiny balance plus a big threatened fee is designed to make paying feel easier than checking.

What to do

Don't tap the link. Check your account by typing the official address yourself, forward the text to 7726 (SPAM), and delete it. Paste it into Scam Doctor if you want a verdict first.

Frequently asked questions

Does USPS text about unpaid fees?
