How-to guide
Account recovery and verification-code scams
Verification codes are keys to your accounts — so scammers have built clever ways to get you to hand them over, often by pretending to be a friend in trouble.
How the code scam works
- A hacked friend's account messages you: "I got locked out, I sent a code to your number, can you forward it?"
- The code is actually for YOUR account — forwarding it lets them take it over.
- Or a paid "recovery service" promises to restore your hacked account for a fee, then does nothing.
What to do
Never share a verification code with anyone — no legitimate person or service needs it. If a friend's account is asking, call them directly to confirm. Recover hacked accounts only through the platform's official help pages, free.
Frequently asked questions
Should I forward a verification code to a friend?
Never. A code sent to your number is for your account — forwarding it hands over access. Call your friend to confirm; their account is likely hacked.
Can a service recover my hacked account for a fee?
Use the platform's official recovery process (free). Paid "recovery" offers that contact you are usually scams.
