Area code 347 is a real the New York City boroughs code (United States). But a text or call from a 347 number is very often spam or a scam: numbers are cheap to spin up and easy to spoof to look local. The area code alone never proves who is really contacting you.

Why am I getting texts from a 347 number?
If a 347 text landed out of nowhere, it's almost always one of these:
- Mass smishing. Scammers blast text-phishing messages to huge lists of random numbers — a 347 sender doesn't mean it's local or that they know you.
- Spoofing. The 347 number on your screen can be faked so the text looks like it's from your area and you're more likely to trust it.
- "Wrong number" openers. A friendly "Hi, is this Sarah?" text is bait to start a chat that leads to a crypto or romance scam.

- It claims to be a bank, delivery service, toll agency, or government office and creates urgency.
- It asks you to tap a link, pay a small fee, or "verify" card, login, or one-time-code details.
- The link isn't the company's real website — often a look-alike with extra words or an odd ending.
- It arrived unexpectedly, uses a generic greeting, or pressures you to act right now.
What to do about a 347 text or call
- Don't tap any link and don't reply — not even "STOP" to a sender you don't recognise.
- Don’t call back from the message. If it claims to be a company you use, find the official number yourself and contact them that way.
- Forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM) so your carrier can block the sender, then delete the message.
- Block the number on your phone, and report it to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.

Getting 347 texts on your iPhone or Android
You can cut down unknown-sender spam without waiting for the next one. On iPhone, open Settings › Apps › Messages and turn on Filter Unknown Senders to move texts from numbers you don't know into a separate list, then use Report Junk under any scam text. On Android, open Messages › settings › Spam protection and switch it on, and use Block & report spam on the conversation. Neither stops a determined scammer, so still treat any unexpected 347 message as suspicious.
